Fact Check: Flu Is NOT A Body Detoxification Process But An Infectious Disease Not Scientific

Is influenza or flu a natural detoxification process of the body to get rid of excess toxins in the cells, and are viruses just remnants of dying cells? No, this is not true: The flu is an infectious disease caused by the influenza virus.

The story appeared in a video (archived here) which was published on TikTok on November 5, 2023. The text in the video says in Czech, translated into English by Lead Stories staff:

Influenza is the body's natural detoxification process in response to excessive toxicity in the cells. Viruses are the remnants of dying cells.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus, which is spread either by tiny droplets in the air when the infected person coughs or sneezes, or by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus.

Influenza infects the human respiratory system, including the nose, throat and lungs. It can lead to mild to severe illness and in some cases death. The World Health Organization estimates that there are one billion cases of seasonal flu each year. The best prevention against the disease is vaccination, which is recommended for pregnant women, seniors and their caregivers, and people with weakened immune systems.

Viruses are microscopic organisms that can infect hosts, such as humans, animals, or plants, for replication. The virus is a minuscule bit of genetic information inside a protective shell. In addition to influenza, other viruses cause colds or COVID-19. There are more than 200 viruses that have been discovered and are known to infect humans.
